USA Wines for Thanksgiving

Date: Fri, Oct 27, 2023 - Sun, Oct 29, 2023
Time 2:00 PM to 6:00 PM
Venue: Tasting Room @ 222 D Street in Davis

Wine. My favorite four letter word. If the bird gets overcooked, or Aunt Jane spills the gravy, or the Seahawks beat the Niners, hopefully WINE! is the only four letter word that is shouted on Thanksgiving :-)

With the Holidays here (it sure feels like it outside!) we are opening ten USA wines perfectly paired for Thanksgiving Day.

Because we have been so focused on Italy and France in our recent tastings, most of these USA wines have never been opened in the shop. And if they sell out, especially the amazing 2017 Farella Merlot that we only got one case of, we may never open them again!

In the mood for...

Perfectly balanced Chardonnay? Yep!
Finger licking good Pinot Noir? Oh yeah.
Single vineyard reds for the relative that insists on drinking big, dark, tannic wines even with mashed potatoes? Please tell Uncle Mike we've got him covered.

On the Tasting Bar this weekend:

2022 Laird Pinot Grigio, Cold Creek Ranch, Carneros, Napa, CA. On a 300 acre vineyard in Carneros, grows perfect Pinot Grigio and Chardonnay, heightened by the sea breeze from the San Pablo bay. A light-bodied pinot grigio with bright acidity and exciting fruit flavors of guava, elderflower, and lime.
🍴Pairs with halibut with tropical mango salsa.

2021 Bokisch Albariño, Las Cerezas Vineyard, Mokelumne River, Lodi, CA. Markus Bokisch is a UC Davis grad and wine grower with a passion for organic and sustainable farm management. Well known in the wine industry, he has produced many delicious spanish grape varietals including this Albariño.
🍴Steamed clams with garlic and saffron.

2020 Januik Chardonnay, Cold Creek Vineyard, Columbia Valley, Woodinville, WA. Wanting that classic classic Chardonnay thats not too buttery or oak? This Januik from Washington wine brings balanced, richness and some citrus to the table.
🍴Creamy garlic mashed potatoes with all the toppings.

2021 Mathis Rosé de Grenache, Sonoma Valley, CA. With a silky texture and excellent flavor, this rosé of grenache is sure to be a great addition to the Thanksgiving meal. Move over pinots. We are excited to have this vintage in the shop! Peter Mathis is passionate about grenache, grows and makes his own wines and is especially proud of this rosé.
🍴Celery and currant stuffing with roasted fall vegetables.

2015 Tête-à-Tête GSM, Domaine de la Terre Rouge, Sierra Foothills, CA. The oldest wine on the table but definitely a palate pleaser. The blend (specifically): 39% Grenache, 39% Mourvèdre & 22% Syrah. 2015 brought ripe fruit and brightness to the rhone varietals of this region, and this wine shows it.
🍴Smoked turkey and roasted squash.

2021 Division Gamay Noir “Lutte”, Willamette Valley, OR. "A fantastic wine brooding both brightness and darkness." "Lutte" is French for "fight to overcome", and Division did just that by bringing Oregon Gamay noir to our attention and the attention of other wine lovers. This wine brings notes of spice and strawberries, with a complexity that will leave you wanting more.
🍴Dry-brined turkey with tangy honey glaze.

2019 Porter Creek Pinot Noir, Russian River Valley, CA. The Davis family uses traditional old world winemaking methods to create Pinot that is simply delicious. The Russian River valley steep hillsides do not dissapoint for grape growing and they are able to use biodynamic methods. Enjoy this beautiful estate bottled wine
🍴Spatchcock turkey with anise and orange.

2018 Claiborne & Churchill Pinot Noir "Classic" Edna Valley, CA.
A favorite winery here at Wines in Tandem, their 'classic' winemaking style results in a gentle, earthy, almost feminine Pinot  from the cooler Edna Valley in San Luis Obispo County. Aromas of nose petals and a touch of that 'classic' cola note of crowd-pleasing Pinots jump from the glass. Integrated and balanced tannins lingere pleasantly without overstaying their  welcome.
🍴Prosciutto butter, oven-roasted turkey and classic gravy.

2021 August West Pinot Noir, Santa Lucia Highlands, Monterey County, CA.
From the brilliant winemaking of Ed Kurtzman, the Santa Lucia Highlands Pinot expresses ripe cranberries, baking spices like cinammon and nutmeg, and a lush profile. Finishes with vanilla bean and a pronmounced but smooth tannins.
🍴Pancetta-sage turkey with pancetta-sage gravy.

2017 Farella Merlot, Coombsville, Napa Valley, CA
The multigenerational Farella family are UC Davis grads and the founding winery of the Coombsville AVA in Napa Valley.
The Merlot's dark ruby color shows the wines true character early. This full bodied red from a warm vintage in Napa greets with aromas of  toast, coffee and ripe plum. A big profile - for Merlot, not for Napa -  includes firm tannins and a bit more alcholol (14.5%) that stands out next to the Pinot Noirs, but certainly has a place at the table. A savory side makes this is a great Thanksgiving pairing.
🍴Bourbon and brown sugar glazed roast turkey.
